The final call in 2011 by “Independence of the Seas” to A Coruna (27th December), closed a milestone year for cruise traffic at the port. It has broken all records in passenger numbers, consolidating the position of A Coruna as a preferred cruise destination.
The “Independence of the Seas” made its first stop in 2010 and throughout 2011 visited the city a further eight times. 13 calls are scheduled for 2012.
Overall, 2011 has been an extremely positive year for the port of A Coruña, with 78 calls and a total of 128,558 tourists (180,000 including crew members), a 81.8% increase over 2010 when 70,695 cruise tourists visited the city. This exceeds all forecasts.
Enrique Losada, Chairman of the Port Authority of A Coruna said: “We took our commitment to support the cruise industry very seriously so we are delighted with the excellent results we’ve had in 2011. It has been very positive for the port, services and local commerce as well as putting A Coruna more firmly on the map as an international destination. What is particularly pleasing is that this has all happened around the time we launched the new cruise terminal so an increasing number of tourists can enjoy a speedy, pleasant start to visiting our city. We are very much looking forward to 2012.”
